A distressing incident occurred on December 20th, just after playtime at Crayon Castle Childcare in the Florence neighborhood of Omaha. Around 4 p.m., a vehicle lost control and crashed through the fence surrounding the play area behind the building. The daycare staff and nearby residents immediately rushed to assist those involved. Fortunately, none of the children at the daycare were harmed, but the crash highlighted ongoing concerns about speeding in the area.

The accident took place as the children were heading inside from their outdoor activities. Jacqueline Casey, associated with Crayon Castle, recounted her shock upon hearing the crash. The vehicle was carrying five young passengers, with only one properly restrained. One child suffered severe injuries after hitting the windshield, while the driver, a mother, sustained significant harm, including a badly injured leg. The car's impact was halted by bollards positioned beside the fence, preventing further damage to the building.

Angle Rodriguez, owner of F-1 Barbershop next door, was working when he heard the collision. He described seeing a headlight amidst the wreckage and immediately joined others in aiding those trapped inside the damaged vehicle. Despite the car door being jammed, Angle managed to pull it open and help extract the injured individuals. His swift actions were crucial in providing immediate assistance to the victims.

Video footage of the crash revealed that the driver had accelerated to overtake a truck in the left lane before losing control. The vehicle struck a drainage curb before crashing into the daycare’s fence. Residents and business owners in the vicinity have long complained about excessive speeding along North 30th Street. Angel noted that while traffic lights near HyVee provide some relief, there remains a stretch where vehicles frequently exceed speed limits.

In response to this incident, Omaha Police conducted a speed enforcement operation during the afternoon rush hour, pulling over several drivers. This event underscores the urgent need for improved safety measures and stricter enforcement to protect both residents and establishments in the area. The community hopes that such efforts will prevent future accidents and ensure the well-being of all who live and work there.
