Celebrity-backed Tequilas up 16% in 2023
Celebrity Spirits Brands Outperform Global Categories, Tequila Sees Biggest Boost
The global spirits industry has witnessed a remarkable surge in the popularity of celebrity-backed brands, with data from IWSR revealing that these brands often outperform the growth of their respective categories worldwide. The Tequila category, in particular, has seen the most significant boost from celebrity involvement.Celebrities Bring Instant Trust and Accessibility to Spirits Brands
The Rise of Celebrity Spirits Brands
The global spirits market has experienced a proliferation of celebrity-backed brands in recent years, with stars such as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, George Clooney, and many others launching their own Tequila, whiskey, rum, and gin labels. While the rate of new celebrity brand entries has slowed down from 2022, IWSR's data suggests that brands owned or heavily backed by celebrities tend to see larger volume growth compared to the overall category performance. In 2023, celebrity-backed whiskey brands grew by 8% in volume, outpacing the 2% growth of the whiskey category as a whole. Similarly, celebrity-owned rum brands saw an 11% increase in volume, significantly outperforming the 4% decline in the rum category. However, the category that has witnessed the most substantial impact from celebrity involvement is Tequila.Tequila's Meteoric Rise with Celebrity Backing
In 2022, Tequila brands founded by celebrities soared by 40%, three times the category's overall growth rate of 13%. Last year, the trend continued, with celebrity-backed Tequila brands growing by 16%, while the category as a whole saw a 3% increase. IWSR attributes this remarkable growth to the timing, as the renaissance of the Tequila category coincided with the rise of celebrity spirits brands. The Tequila category is particularly well-suited for celebrity involvement, as it is attracting a large number of new drinkers who are seeking premium and reassuring products. Celebrity endorsement provides a "degree of trust" for consumers, particularly for fans of the famous personalities involved. Additionally, the association with a household name brings an instant potential consumer base for these brands, who are primed to be "inherently receptive" to the product and "instantly accessible" through the celebrity's extensive social media network. The Power of Celebrity Branding
IWSR's report highlights that celebrity involvement in spirits brands offers a significant advantage in terms of brand personality and positioning. Emily Neill, the chief operating officer of IWSR, explains that "with celebrity involvement, a brand immediately has a personality ready-made. Non-celebrity brands, by contrast, have to work over a period of time to create their personality and positioning."This ready-made brand personality and the trust associated with celebrity endorsement have translated into tangible results. In the year ended July 2023, celebrity brands accounted for 10% of spirits sold in Union's hospitality venues, with Diageo-owned Casamigos (co-founded by George Clooney) being the most popular choice. Furthermore, the average price of a celebrity spirits drink was found to be .25, compared to .38 for all brands, indicating that consumers are willing to pay a premium for products backed by famous personalities. Not a Guaranteed Success
While celebrity involvement has proven to be a significant advantage for many spirits categories, it does not always guarantee success. In 2023, despite launches from the likes of Brad Pitt, Emma Watson, and Margot Robbie, volumes of celebrity-owned or backed gins declined by 1%, while the gin category as a whole grew by 4%. The previous year saw celebrity-backed gins soar by 32% while the category rose by 8% globally.According to IWSR's Emily Neill, the success of celebrity-backed brands is heavily dependent on the overall performance of the category. She explains, "When a category is trending, like Tequila, you can see celebrity brands outperforming. But when a category is beginning to struggle and the boom has ended – like gin – being a celebrity brand doesn't always insulate you from that downturn."The global spirits industry continues to evolve, with celebrity-backed brands playing an increasingly prominent role. While the impact of celebrity involvement can be significant, particularly in categories like Tequila, it is not a guaranteed recipe for success. Brands must navigate the ever-changing market dynamics and consumer preferences to maintain their competitive edge, regardless of the star power behind them.
